Green Leadership: Empowering VET Actors for a Greener Future
In times of growing environmental urgency, transforming how we teach and learn is essential to develop the competencies needed to ensure a greener future. The Green Leadership project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme, responds to this call with the vocation to embed sustainability into vocational education and training (VET) systems across Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia learning from the initiatives developped in Finland.
Why Sustainability in VET Matters
A key aspect of the green economy is the rise of new workflows, recycled materials, and advanced waste management, including using waste as raw material. This creates demand for new and often complex jobs—some involving health and safety risks, waste handling, and heavy machinery. Both skilled engineers and blue-collar workers will be needed to drive and sustain circular economy processes. VET plays a critical role in shaping the future workforce. As industries undergo green transitions, VET institutions must be at the forefront—equipping students not only with relevant technical skills but also the green competences needed for a sustainable economy. The Baltic Green Leadership initiative acknowledges this by targeting two crucial groups: VET teachers and managers, and VET students.
Integrating Sustainability into the Curriculum
Building on successful methodologies from the Green Leadership project, the Baltic initiative adopts an open and integrative curriculum approach. Sustainability is not treated as a side-topic but as a part of all vocational disciplines—from construction to hospitality. This helps ensure that both teachers and future professionals regardless of their field of work, recognize where sustainability fits in, understand and act on their environmental responsibilities.
Innovative Pedagogies for Student Engagement
Student engagement is key to succeed. Therefore the project supports teachers in reimagining their teaching practices through interactive methods, such as problem-based learning, real-life case studies, gamification and cross-border challenges. These approaches do more than transfer knowledge—they lay the foundation for civic engagement, foster critical thinking and creativity, and build cross-cultural empathy.
A Whole-System, Multistakeholder Vision
What sets the Green Leadership project apart is its value-chain approach. It connects VET students, educators, and businesses in a ecosystem. This ensures that green skills developed in classrooms are aligned with the real needs of employers and communities. Cooperation with businesses allow students to regard sustainability as a real challenge on the agenda of many companies.
The Green Leadership project is a model of how vocational education plays an important role within the green transition. By equipping teachers, education institution managers, and students with the right tools, values, and networks, they become agents of change for a sustainable future.
