During our recent workshop, we brainstormed real, actionable ways to bring sustainability competences into STEAM education. Here’s what came out of it and I would love your thoughts!
Arts 🎨
- Create eco-theatre projects and natural sculptures to spark conversations on sustainability.
- Use comic books, films, and videos to tell stories about biodiversity and climate action.
- Record nature sounds and integrate them into music projects.
- Launch podcasts on environmental themes.
Engineering & Maths 🔧
- Organise a semester-long student challenge:
- Teams identify local resources or waste materials.
- Develop new building materials and calculate their carbon footprint.
- Pitch ideas to peers, parents, and business owners – with prizes for originality and impact.
- Include entrepreneurship training and peer learning to boost confidence and skills.
Science 🔬
- Start with nature journaling: observe local ecosystems and reflect on feelings and insights.
- Explore biomimicry: how does nature solve problems? Apply those ideas to renewable energy or circular economy projects.
- Use nature-based solutions (e.g., ponds for water purification) as case studies.
Technology 💻
- Analyse a smartphone’s lifecycle:
- What’s inside? Where do components come from?
- Discuss responsible use and recycling.
- Use apps for nature exploration and digital storytelling.
- Teach critical digital literacy: spotting fake news, understanding energy use in tech (e.g., data storage, AI).
- Encourage community engagement through tech – podcasts, blogs, and social media campaigns.
💬 Your turn:
👉 Which of these ideas could you pilot in your classroom or community?
👉 What other creative solutions do you have for embedding sustainability in STEAM?
Let’s share and co-create! 🌍✨
Dear Petra and all the team;
I am so happy to take part in workshop and have a chance to discuss and share experience about STEAM and Sustainability. We work in science group with science teachers from different countries. One of our key topic is to carry nature's sustainable strategies and principle into our solutions about global problems. In that case biomimicry is an important methodology.
I plan to pilot into my science class.
I realy liked all ideas ,thanks them.
Record nature sounds and integrate them into music projects.👍
While doing outdoor lessons we can listen
Nature sounds like "Deep Forest"( Music Group)
