The seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, UNEA-7, takes place in Nairobi, Kenya, from Monday 8 to Friday 12 December, and it is possible to follow the proceedings online.

What is UNEA and why does it matter

UNEA is the highest global decision-making body on the environment. It brings together environment ministers and delegates from all UN Member States to agree on shared priorities for tackling the world’s most urgent environmental challenges. Held every two years at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, UNEA shapes global environmental policy on issues ranging from climate change and biodiversity to pollution and resource use.

What UNEA offers for the education and climate community

Unlike COP30, which focuses specifically on climate negotiations under the UNFCCC, UNEA takes a broader view of the environmental crisis. It looks at the interconnected challenges of climate change, nature loss and pollution, often referred to as the triple planetary crisis. For education and climate stakeholders, this means UNEA complements the momentum of COP by linking climate action more strongly with environmental governance, science-policy dialogue, youth engagement, and environmental literacy.

UNEA-7 in Nairobi this December

Alongside high-level ministerial discussions, UNEA-7 includes a rich programme of side events and Green Room sessions that explore how knowledge, communication, youth leadership, and data can drive environmental action.
