Climate misinformation is becoming increasingly sophisticated, with artificial intelligence making it easier to create and adapt misleading narratives. Beyond spreading false information, misinformation can create confusion, deepen polarisation, and weaken trust in science, public institutions, and climate action. How can educators help learners navigate an increasingly complex information landscape?
Join us for an interactive Community Café exploring practical ways to recognise, understand and respond to climate misinformation. Together, we'll discuss how misinformation spreads, why some narratives are designed to create confusion rather than simply spread falsehoods, and how educators can strengthen critical thinking and digital literacy in their own contexts.
The session will feature Augusto Tamponi, EU Digital Ambassador, an international affairs and public policy analyst specialising in digital policy, AI, online misinformation and digital communication, who will share insights into today's misinformation landscape and practical strategies for educators.
During the café, participants will take part in a collaborative exercise exploring how climate misinformation develops and identify practical intervention points for educators. We'll also discuss who benefits from particular narratives and the purpose they may serve.
Before the cafe, we invite you to think about and write down any climate-related claims, headlines or "facts" that you have found confusing or difficult to verify. These will help enrich our discussion and may be referenced during the session.
After the café, participants will receive a selection of resources to continue exploring the topic.
