Community Café - Intergenerational Fairness in Education for Climate Action [Recording available]

Trine Larsen

On 11 March 2026, the Education for Climate Community Café will explore the concept of Intergenerational Fairness (IGF) - the Coalition's annual priority for 2026.

This café will introduce the concept of IGF, followed by interactive brainstorming activities and co-creation activities, translating EU recommendations into practical local actions. Working together in small groups, we will design simple pilot initiatives and share them in plenary, contributing to a collective vision for fair and sustainable education across generations.

Step into this virtual café, listen, learn, co-create, and share your knowledge and questions — whether you're already working with IGF or want to learn more about it.

For more information on IGF, see this EU briefing: 'Making sure no generation gets left behind'

Please feel free to invite non-community members, friends and colleagues, if interested.

Café Résumé

This session brought together 26 engaged community members, creating a lively and international exchange of ideas around intergenerational fairness.

The Café opened with an introduction to the community and its 2026 priority: intergenerational fairness, framed by the five focus areas.

To set the tone, participants took part in a Slido word cloud icebreaker, responding to the question: 'What does intergenerational fairness mean to you? The two most prominent answers were empathy and solidarity. This was significant given that the 'voices behind the strategy' (a citizens' panel of 150 randomly selected EU citizens) diagnosed today's society as not being fair and suffering from a weakened social contract - 'every generation for itself' where older generations feel forgotten, younger generations feel discarded, and the middle generations are crushed by responsibility.

After the Slido, a presentation of the New EU Strategy on IGF followed, giving participants a shared understanding of its objectives and key activities, the voices that helped shape it, and the processes behind its development. This provided a foundation for the collaborative work that came next.

Participants then moved into four breakout rooms, where they worked together on an exercise designed to apply the strategy to their local contexts. In these smaller groups, they also reflected on three of the citizen recommendations that underpin the strategy, connecting policy priorities with community realities.

The session closed with an open-floor reflection and sharing round. Participants unmuted to share insights and ideas, including the wish for a challenge group on intergenerational fairness, where they can share resources and IGF initiatives.

Join the Intergenerational Fairness Challenge Group and share resources and ideas on how to work with the new strategy!
