Soil can open the door to rich interdisciplinary learning.

The Exploring soil: Learning across STEM learning scenario helps students understand why soil matters by connecting biology, chemistry, physics and maths. It gives teachers a structured way to guide learners through practical investigations of soil composition, pH, moisture, erosion and nutrient content.

Students can explore how organisms contribute to soil health, how water is retained and filtered and how soil conditions affect ecosystems and agriculture. By analysing data and connecting findings to real-world examples, learners build confidence in interpreting results and explaining environmental processes.

For the Education for Climate Community, this resource is a useful example of how sustainability can be embedded across subjects. It supports systems thinking and helps students understand the links between climate, biodiversity, food systems and land use.

It can also help teachers make climate and sustainability education more practical, local and evidence-based.
