Last week, the have officially launched the second season od the Youth Climate LAB. This season will tackle AI and climate change in learning communities through different research angles and with the help of international experts.

In this introductory session, we have the pleasure to hear from Vittoria Rivka Bubil, working with Cristian Brasoneavu in AI language services in DG DGT of the European Commission. She talked about the programme she is working with, mentioning how this can be an examples of usage of AI tool to teach & learn about climate change.

We also had the opportunity to hear from Daniel Villar Onrubia from DG JRC working on digital education and skills. He introducted the topic with an educational lense.

After these two presentations, the young citizens starring this season had insightful discussion in break-out rooms.

Learning Scenario Gorup:

The discussions tackled 3 main topics that were connected to the AI and the Climate Education.

  • Opportunities that we have as educators/students for using AI and addressing the climate changes, concluding that we use AI for getting fast informations and as a "prediction" tool on what would happen in the future on climate related problems.
  • Challenges when using AI for climate action purposes is that "it is not always true" and we are most of the time getting misinformed. There are a lot of easy ways of sabotaging AI (for example if we say that some of the information is not correct the AI will agree with us and will give us different information).
  • How can we use all of this to influence on building learning scenarios and practical recommendations.

The learning scenarios group decided to select target groups that want to engage in our activities, in our case we chose high school students but also educators, and by using AI or virtual reality we will create some sort of gamification game for example Treasure Hunt based on the GreenComp Framework, so that the high school students will interact in a fun way but at the same time educate themselves and get more knowledge when it comes to climate changes, because it is proven that students are learning quicker and easier throughout brainstormings and gamifications.
