Tourism is responsible for around 10% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide and is a key economic sector in many regions. The objectives of the project ATRE-Low carbon travel are to mobilise a network of European stakeholders interested in the sustainable development of tourism and to co-produce tools to educate adults in the issue.
To rethink our tourism practices, the ATRE project partners produced 3 digital learning tools, targeted at the various categories of tourism stakeholders:
- a MOOC for travel agency and tour operator,
- an online APP for destination service providers (guides, tourism site managers, hotels, restaurants, transport operators),
- and an online game for all travellers.
The learning scenario, common to all three tools, is based on 4 major steps: understanding the climate emergency and measuring our impact, reducing our GHG emissions in our tourism activities, contributing to positive impacts and adapting our behaviour to climate change.
The educational process is based on empowering adult learners to recognize their current or potential negative and positive impact on the climate issue. It's an entire 'culture of climate change' that needs to be developed in the whole sector.
