The Greencoin project

The Greencoin project team is developing an interactive system to promote pro-environmental behaviour among people living in urban areas. The main aim of the project is to use new technologies and social innovations for environmental education and the development of green skills among city dwellers. This unique venture began when we first met and started working together in Otwock.

Our team is made up of six partners: Gdańsk University of Technology,  Maria Grzegorzewska University, Oslomet - Oslo Metropolitan University, University of Stavanger, Warsaw School of Economics and City Initiative Association.

The idea of the Greencoin system is based on the premise that city dwellers should be rewarded for their environmentally friendly actions.

This is the reason why we have created the PULA application, which develops pro-environmental knowledge and skills through a gamification mechanism and reward system. In the first phase of the project, the city of Gdańsk is a living laboratory for this experiment. Our application was tested by 29 early adopters. During this first phase of testing, users earned points (called Good Coins) by reading articles on environmental and climate issues and then taking quizzes based on their knowledge. Participants were also rewarded with coins for things such as using public transport, cycling to work/school, buying local products, sorting waste, collecting litter from public areas. The app motivates users to take action against the climate crisis.

We are currently testing the app in Gdańsk, but in the next stage we would like to extend its reach to other cities. The Greencoin project welcomes on board various stakeholders, city authorities, a variety of local representatives who will enrich the reward system, and residents who would like to use the application. We are inviting all those who want to take action for the environment.
