The #GreenComp is finally out!

The new European competence framework on sustainability for lifelong learning has just been published: a very useful tool that will help learners and educators to better understand what sustainability as a competence entails.

The GreenComp consists of four interrelated competence areas (embodying sustainability values, embracing complexity in sustainability, envisioning sustainable futures, acting for sustainability) and twelve interlinked competences that can support children, young people and adults to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes to think, plan and act for a greener and more sustainable future.

Together with our #EducationforClimate Coalition and the proposal for a Council Recommendation on learning for environmental sustainability, the new released GreenComp represent a further important effort to include sustainability at the heart of education and training systems of all EU countries!

A special 'thank you' from the #EducationforClimate Secretariat to all the JRC/EAC Team, and in particular to our #EducationforClimate community member Guia BIANCHI , one of the main authors of this remarkable work! We are glad to have you on board with us!

Hi there, looking great. I would like to check how this framework links or matches with the UNECE Competency Matrix for sustainable development. We utilised that one as the basis of The Sustainability Games framework, It might be great to rework our or add new elements to also be able to measure and educate based on GreenComb. Check out https://sustainability.games/whitepaper/toolbox-features

How could we approach this?

Hi Thijs Struijk  I suggest you to start a discussion here in the platform and ask to the #EducationforClimate Community about this! Maybe someone will be able to answer your question ;)

Great news, this is gold! Does anybody know if it will be translated into national languages or not? I would like to start discussing it with the teachers I work with and I don't know whether to start translating some of the essential parts myself or wait for the official version in Romanian to be issued.

I don’t think that it will be translated soon, but maybe Guia BIANCHI  could answer your question better than me. Why don’t you start a discussion here in the platform and ask to the #EducationForClimate community if anyone is interested in helping you with this task? :)

Hi Ada Lungu , thank you for your interest and thank you Nicole BRUTTOMESSO and Susanne SZKOLA   for tagging me.

Indeed, it is not customary to translate competence frameworks (GreenComp, and see previous: DigComp, for digital competences; EntreComp, for entrepreneurial competences; LifeComp, for personal social and learning to learn competences) in the languages of Member States. At least not for now. However, bottom-up approaches are more than welcome!

A disclaimer: this is my opinion :)

Have a nice day!

Thank you, Guia BIANCHI, that was very useful. By the way, let me congratulate you and your co-authors for the amazing work you did on this report.

Maybe first we could build a Participatory Challenge around examples of knowledge (K), skills (S) and attitudes (A)? A self-assessment tool? Something to use in the classroom? And then think about translation? What do you think?

Guia BIANCHI and team: congratulations with this very useful framework! Let's take up the challenge to motivate stakeholders to use this excellent reference model and translate the competences into practice. Both for formal learning settings as for non-formal activities.
