Online course on biodiversity, alien species & citizen science at EU Academy

The European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN) Citizen Science activities aim at bringing together people, scientists and policy makers in an effort to monitor and control invasive alien species (IAS) that cause damage to native species, ecosystems and human’s health.

IAS are non-native biological organisms (plants, animals and others) that are widely spread, including in urban environment. IAS introduction and impacts are direclty influenced by human activities and climate change.Timely reporting helps to prevent their further spread; thus, people’s contribution is really important.

This course aims at raising awareness, increasing knowledge and involving the public in monitoring IAS in Europe, promoting people’s engagement in IAS management, and supporting the implementation of the EU Regulation 1143/2014 on IAS.

The online course also targets teachers who seek expert knowledge on biodiversity and want to give their students the opportunity to experience citizen science activities. The access to this course is free, open and accessible to all stakeholders and people interested in the topic.

And it is now available in 7 languages (EN, ES, PT, IT, DE, FR, DL)! This MOOC offers quality knowledge on biodiversity and alien species, but also very interesting activites for teachers and students, and invites learners to use an App wich makes them become citizen scientists involved in data collection. The creation of the MOOC also involved teachers from italian schools and European Schools in a co-design process in order to be sure that the content was adapted to schools. Well done really to you Celia and your colleagues scientists from the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission involved in this project. I would be very interested to hear from the teachers who are going to include this MOOC in their teaching.
