Education for Climate Coalition at COP28

We are glad to announce that the Education Climate community will be present at COP28 via an online side-event!

This year again, more than ever, we wanted to be present at the United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (the “COP”).

Education is increasingly being addressed by the COPs, which is excellent news, and COP28 in particular will provide an opportunity for important discussions on the major role that education can play in preparing our societies for and responding to climate change.

Under the title “Education for Climate: boosting Green Competences for Education Transformation”, our online session will be the occasion to explain what the EU is doing on green education at EU and global level, with examples of policies showcased by our colleagues Ulrike Pisiotis and Annika Sundback-Lindroos.

But it will also be the opportunity to learn about concrete examples of actions led by teachers, as Grozdena Chalakova, winner of the 2023 community prize of our call for innovative green education actions, but also from Noor Halini Allias, malaysian teacher involved in the TeachersCOP initiative led by the Office for Climate Education (OCE) that will also be represented by Nicolas Vogt, Education Officer at OCE.

We believe in the dialogue between teachers  and people dealing with education policies to better design and implement the future of climate change policy. This is also the purpose of a community like ours that encourage a participatory approach among all actors involved in education transformation.

Our session will be moderated by EU Climate Pact Ambassador Fons Janssen.

Join us on 8 December, register here

Don’t hesitate to share the event platform link with your peers, and follow our online session during COP28  via the European Union Side Events platform.

Note that we had the opportunity to prepare a preCOP session during the Education for Climate Day on 15 November with companions and major partners from our community who will be present at the COP. The idea was to learn about our respective plans and confront views and brainstorm on the main priorities and key messages that could be conveyed at the COP on the role played by education and green competences in the transition at stake.

You can learn more about the outcome of this session and follow up the discussion here

And what an interesting session it was! Thank you, all, for your participation!

We got quite some interesting questions, from youth over EU offers to concrete practices. Read for yourselves, we will be documenting answers in a separate comment in the following days.

On Youth:
> How does the EU encourage children to share their own ideas and initiatives for a greener future?
> Do you have any tips on how to teach about climate change without causing more climate anxiety within the younger students?
> How can parents be involved better in developing green competences with their children?

On EU:
> Are there any policymakers from the cultural sector involved in dedicated working groups (on climate education)?
> How is EU supporting teachers in incorporating green education into their curricula, and what resources/programs are available to assist them in this process?
> From a European perspective, what are the most pressing climate education topics?

On concrete practices:
> How do you tackle disinformation in climate education engagement?
> Are there any cross-country projects? Is there a network of EU teachers to share expertise and collaborate?
