The COP29 'Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience' is paving the way for stronger climate action.
As COP29 Azerbaijan unfolds, our colleagues from the European Training Foundation's Network for Excellence and its global greening vocational education and training partnership, are hosting an event focused at advancing climate goals through skills development and workforce mobility in the construction and renewable energy sectors.
The construction sector is responsible for nearly 40% of global CO₂ emissions, yet sustainable building practices could reduce emissions by 50% in just five year.
The renewable energy sector, especially wind and solar, now accounts for 75% of new energy capacity, cutting 250 million tons of CO₂ annually.
But both sectors face a growing skills gap which could delay critical climate actions:
- By 2030, 60% of construction workers will need new skills for sustainable practices, and 85% of renewable energy workers will require training for emerging technologies.
- The renewable energy sector will need over 11 million skilled workers by 2030 to meet growing demand and climate goals, according to International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
- Over 50% of construction firms already struggle finding workers skilled in green building techniques.
Join the discussion how to advance skills development for meeting the climate goals (discussion in English with interpretation provided in French, Turkish and Ukrainian).
