Arts for Sustainability is a project developed in partnership between CEiiA (R&D institute), the Municipality of Matosinhos, six local schools (300 students and teachers) and the National Plan of the Arts (Portugal). The objectives of the initiative were to promote behavior change and raise awareness to sustainability challenges within the school community, through the arts as an inspirational and universal language.

Groups of students have translated sustainability messages into artistic creations, through different forms of visual and plastic expressions, producing Artistic Manifestos for Sustainability. This work was developed in collaboration with an Atelier of Artists (Arara), comprising teacher training actions, classroom working hours, visits to artistic spaces, and student mentoring sessions.

The manifestos have been exposed in an Open Day and in the Public Space (street furniture) in the City of Matosinhos, in order to inspire the citizens to adopt sustainable lifestyles. Students acted as 'agents of change'.

This initiative amplifies the voices of a generation striving to communicate their views and fosters inclusivity. Their manifestos are expressive and visually impactful outdoors and contribute to conveying the youthful perspective on a sustainable city.

Now, the project will be replicated in more cities in the Northern region of Portugal.
