Green Learning

Gen Z is the generation of the future. From Fridays for Future to Ultima Generazione, they are teaching us that the health of the planet is a duty that cannot be escaped. How to bring this debate into the classroom? How to spark a discussion about what sustainability is and who is doing it?

Green Learning (GL) is a training course aimed at increasing young’s’ awareness of sustainability by involving them in a hands-on activity that starts from the SDGs to identify and tell a story of change and sustainability in their local area. The final output of the course is a journalistic article published in the GL section of Italia Che Cambia, the online news outlet dedicated to stories of positive change.

GL is a multi-device format:

Artificial Intelligence: one of the activities is conducted by a Recommender System developed specifically for the project that guides participants to discover Italia Che Cambia's sustainability stories from their own choices.

Group activities: space maps, brainstorming and research in a learning-by-doing perspective.

Video tutorials: activities are interspersed with videos by Daniela Bartolini, editor of Italia Che Cambia, who explains how to identify a good territorial practice, how to conduct an interview, and how to write an article.

The course has been made available in open-source mode so that it can be replicated independently in secondary schools: the GL platform offers a handbook that guides teachers step by step, giving a detailed description and some practical tips on each activity, and all the teaching tools (video tutorials and Recommender System).

The training course is designed for civics and Italian classes, but can also be implemented by/for teachers of other disciplines (for example, technology, given the use of a Recommender System). Green Learning is in fact an exploration of the topic of sustainability that teachers and participants can experience together, learning from each other.

It's important to bring climate action into the classroom.
I see this training course is a great opportunity for teachers and educators to broaden their own knowledge on climate issues, engage children and teens in the climate debate, strengthen existing climate-related work already happening in schools and support students to contribute to a more sustainable future.
