François Taddei  is a renowned researcher in evolutionary systems biology who became passionate about education as he is very concerned about the urgent need to transform education systems. He is the founder of the Learning Planet Institute (formerly known as the Center for Interdisciplinary Research, CRI, based in Paris),  dedicated to “reinventing learning for all through collective intelligence in order to build sustainable & inclusive learning societies able to rise to the complex challenges we face.”

This can’t but generate interest for the Education for Climate community members.

François shared a few inspiring ideas in this interview such as:

“In order to have education for the transition and sustainability we need a transition in education”

“Education systems are not the most evolving entities. Anything that evolves slower than its environment risks to become obsolete… “

“We need to change the education paradigm. Instead of competing on yesterday’s knowledge on topics they have not chosen, learners have to move to cooperate on the issues that are the most relevant and meaningful to them in order to build the future.”

“As the UN secretary general puts it, there are 4 ways to interact with the youth: the first is to ignore them, the second is to pretend to listen, the third is to have a dialogue. We have been doing the first and the second for too long, and the third is just beginning. But there is a fourth one, and it is what we should do, which is co-constructing the future.

Any decision maker willing to contribute to the greening of education systems for the climate crisis should go that way and co-construct solutions with young people. If there is only one message, that should be the one that can make a difference.”

“Being a reflexive practitioner can be done alone, but it is better to do this in a community.

But you can go one step further by being in a community that learn through research: the community adopts the best possible ways to learn, document what it does and critically assess what works and not, and make results accessible to everyone in the community so that the community becomes a learning community.”

“Some people are dedicating themselves so much to the cause, that they forget themselves, or so much to the cause that they believe that they can mistreat others who are who are not align with their cause. So if you are not learning to care for oneself, others, and the planet, that does not work.”

01:35 What is the Learning Planet Institute? What are its objectives and activities?

07:15 You want to promote an innovative, inclusive and transversal approach to education. Can you help us understand better what you mean by this? How sustainable education can play a role in your strategy to reinvent education?

14:30 How do you foresee the specific role communities of practice can play in achieving your innovation strategy and transforming education?
