Cop15: education does matter.

A deal that appears to be historic has been struck yesterday in Montreal in the occasion of #Cop15 to halt biodiversity loss by 2030.

I am going through the annex now, and what a joy to read that education is repeatedly mentioned, I should rather say transformative and innovative education.

It seems indeed obvious that fighting the effects of climate change and defending biodiversity requires the right knowledge, skills and attitudes for our future, in particular for the ones who are going to build it...

Education is of the outmost importance for the plans we need to set up globally in order to be able to adapt to the environmental change and reduce our negative impact.

Kunming-Montreal Global biodiversity framework

Check these excerpts in particular:

'Section C. Considerations for the implementation of the framework':

'Formal and informal education

22. Implementation of the framework requires transformative, innovative and transdisciplinary education, formal and informal, at all levels, including science-policy interface studies and lifelong learning processes, recognizing diverse world views, values and knowledge systems of indigenous peoples and local communities.'

And under Target 16:

"TARGET 16

Ensure that people are encouraged and enabled to make sustainable consumption choices including by establishing supportive policy, legislative or regulatory frameworks, improving education and access to relevant and accurate information and alternatives, and by 2030, reduce the global footprint of consumption in an equitable manner, including through halving global food waste, significantly reducing overconsumption and substantially reducing waste generation, in order for all people to live well in harmony with Mother Earth."

And target 21:

"TARGET 21

Ensure that the best available data, information and knowledge, are accessible to decision makers, practitioners and the public to guide effective and equitable governance, integrated and participatory management of biodiversity, and to strengthen communication, awareness-raising, education, monitoring, research and knowledge management and, also in this context, traditional knowledge, innovations, practices and technologies of indigenous peoples and local communities should only be accessed with their free, prior and informed consent, 23 in accordance with national legislation."

and the whole section K:

"Section K.

Communication, education, awareness and uptake

40. Enhancing communication, education, and awareness on biodiversity and the uptake of this framework by all actors is essential to achieve its effective implementation and behavioural change, promote sustainable lifestyles and biodiversity values, including by: ..."

Read all this section but check in particular these 2 points that are particularly relevant for Education for Climate community members :)

(e) Promoting or developing platforms, partnerships and action agendas, including with media, civil society and educational institutions, including academia, to share information on successes, lessons learned and experiences and to allow for adaptive learning and participation in acting for biodiversity;

(f) Integrating transformative education on biodiversity into formal, non-formal and informal educational programmes, promoting curriculum on biodiversity conservation and sustainable use in educational institutions and promoting knowledge, attitudes, values, behaviours and lifestyles that are consistent with living in harmony with nature;

This all sounds like an excellent plan.

Taking the right steps in the right direction and... including one of our strongest tools... EDUCATION. Great!

What great news. After we complete the climate change curriculum, we can do one for ecology! We need to tell the world about this. So I posted it on Mastodon.
https://mastodon.social/@UncensoredNews/109545252351615997

And Twitter.

But remember twitter (and other corporate sites) censor climate change informatśon. So best to join Mastodon. One friend writes:

"I did a test today and posted the exact same thing on twitter and mastodon at roughly the same time. I'm still getting likes and "retoots" on mastodon, and with over 5500 followers on twitter, not a single like or retweet. The algorithm works against us here. You get more interaction with far less followers there."

And here is how to join Mastodon.
