The eTwinning project Act now was carried out in 2021 involving around 100 students aged 14-15 from 4 European school partners from Italy, Greece and Spain, and was aimed to make students aware of environmental issues related to climate change both at local and global level, with the ultimate goal of promoting their active involvement to change things starting from their daily lives. The eTwinning platform, namely the Twinspace, was the virtual environment were all the tasks were accomplished and showcased. Students delved into the project theme from the testimony of some globally active peers, reflected on their everyday life and what impact their actions have on the environment by interviewing each other and researched about local environmental issues. Subsequently, they worked on some protest songs, experiencing the effectiveness of this medium to stir consciences. They explored some hot topics related to environmental issues (e.g. microplastics, air pollution, greenhouse effect, sustainable diet, ect.) made digital products and quizzes. Finally, on the basis of what they learned in the previous activities, they made a collaborative manifesto, i.e. a song to an original melody to state their commitment.
Methodology applied:
The different activities carried out were designed to make the students active learners. The following methodologies were applied:
- collaborative work in national and transnational groups: creation of a collaborative multilingual glossary, collaborative interviews, analysis of protest songs, creation of a final manifesto
- flipped classroom: watching videos at home and discussing them in class, critical reflection by posing questions, presentation of videos about different topics and creation of quizzes
- independent research starting from a given input to know better their local context with regard to climate-related issues
- creative thinking: students were engaged in creative tasks such as logo creation and song writing
Education for Climate innovation areas:
By watching videos about climate-related issues as well as testimonies from global peer activists, connecting the project topic to Agenda 2030 goals, reflecting on their daily actions and habits and searching about local climate-related news (problem framing), pupils have become aware of the problem both at global and local level. They have been pushed to reflect critically on the impact their daily actions might have on the enviornment and on the positive behaviours they might adopt (individual initiative). Finally they have committed themselves, together with their European partners, by writing a collaborative manifesto by the way of a song (collective action) following the examples of famous singers.
