Can you combine movement, fresh air, and language learning? The Erasmus+ project deutsch.info OLGEA shows how this is possible by connecting German language education with environmental learning. The project supports teachers in moving their lessons outdoors—making learning more practical, sustainable, and motivating for students.

Developed by partner organisations from Slovenia, Croatia, Lithuania, and Germany, OLGEA worked closely with schools to develop guidelines and ready-to-use teaching materials for outdoor language learning. These were successfully tested in real school environments and are now being shared with the wider educational community.

The OLGEA approach combines language learning, movement, and environmental awareness. Students practice German by observing nature, working on small research tasks, or exploring their local environment. The project’s experience shows that learning outdoors not only improves language skills but also boosts motivation, critical thinking, and social competences.

The OLGEA materials are designed for primary and secondary school teachers and include:

  • Guidelines for planning outdoor language lessons
  • Complete lesson scenarios on topics such as "Forest", "Everyday Environmental Awareness", and "Urban Nature"
  • Worksheets, interactive tasks, and background information

All materials are freely available online on deutsch.info, a well-known European platform for learning German as a foreign language. You can access them directly via https://deutsch.info/teachers/olgea.

We invite teachers and educators across Europe to explore these resources, take language learning outdoors, and contribute to a more sustainable, engaging, and interdisciplinary education.
