The Climate Academy, Brussels in India

The Climate Academy, Brussels offers schools and students a radically new, systems-informed approach to CLIMATE education. Supported by 15 chapters of in-depth science and social analysis and based on GreenComp Framework, students are taught to THINK about the climate crisis in larger systems terms and empowered to ACT as true AGENTS of CHANGE in their own communities. The Nobel Prize Teacher Summit helped connect the educator from India Ms. Pooja Godfrey and Mr. Matthew Pye, Founder of Climate Academy and launched Asia’s first Climate Academy on 17 April 2023 at the Flagship school of VIBGYOR Group, VIBGYOR High, Goregaon (west), Mumbai. This initiative was spearheaded by Mr. Shim Matthew, Director Academics and International Partnerships at VIBGYOR Group of Schools. This spectacular launch, watched online by hundreds of viewers along with our international partner schools from France, and the Netherlands, educators from the Nobel Prize Museum, Stockholm, and members from the Swedish Consulate General’s office.  This year Climate Academy is launched in VIBGYOR 33 Schools and enrolled 620 students Pan India.

Launch

Each year, we train the school directors, principals across all schools, and facilitators to equip them to run the Climate Academy in their respective schools. The students meet up on Saturdays and work in groups. They learn from the Climate Academy textbook and do civic engagement by participating in project-based activities in creating awareness through plays, art forms, peer teaching, podcast and video making by engaging with industry experts.

VIBGYOR Group of schools have a pan-India Presence with 36 Schools across India. Students are assigned various topics for their sessions and based on the topics they will be assigned a project. For example, if they learn on Climate Justice then they will produce a video as a team that will be a part of the video making competition and the winning entry will be published on school's website or Facebook page. In another session, they learn about systems thinking and last year they participated in India's largest Art fest, Kala Ghoda Art Fest and displayed their art installation, where hundreds and thousands of visitors are a part of the annual event. The students also engage in street plays and perform in public spaces like malls, school assemblies, orphanages to take the message to the masses.
