Education for Climate at the COP26

Education for Climate at COP26: How can education support the transition towards a climate-neutral society?

EU Programme

“Human-induced climate change is already affecting many weather and climate extremes in every region across the globe. Evidence of observed changes in extremes such as heatwaves, heavy precipitation, droughts, and tropical cyclones, and, in particular, their attribution to human influence, has strengthened since [2014]” (IPCC 2021).

We need to take decisive action to address this, amongst cutting greenhouse gas emissions and moving towards climate-neutrality by 2050. To reach these targets and limit the damages, we need to adapt to the changes happening now and in the future.

Education can’t but not play a crucial role in responding and adapting to this incoming systemic change. By developing and bridging knowledge, skills, behaviours and values, education will enable young Europeans to become engaged and responsible professionals and citizens in a climate-neutral society.

This online side-event will bring together actors of the education community working on the ground who are involved in concrete projects aiming to make a difference. They will present their activities and reflect on the ways and means needed to promote change in education and on how to strengthen capabilities for Education for Environmental Sustainability (EES).

The European Commission is pleased to co-organise this event with the Office for Climate Education, an international initiative which mission is to promote climate change education for students worldwide, and the Climate Fresk, a French NGO dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of climate change.

On the occasion of this event, the European Commission will present the “Education for Climate Coalition”, the new participatory European community of practice that will mobilise education and training actors, but also pupils and students, to share, ideate and co-create innovative climate education solutions.

Working together is the only way to fight climate change.
